In the history of the United States, Oneida men and women have made significant contributions to the birth of the nation and have been America's first ally in both war and peace.
The Oneida are known for bringing corn and supplies to George
Washington's starving soldiers at Valley Forge in the winter
of 1777 - 78. Acknowledgment and remuneration for their loyalty
and service established the sovereign relationship between the
Oneida and the United States, evident in the Treaties of 1792
and 1794. The sacrifices and contributions made by the Oneida
and others in the birth of the new nation and throughout the
history of this country continues into the 21st century.
Since the Revolutionary War, the Oneida have defended their
homeland by serving in every military encounter the United States
has participated, including the War of 1812, the Civil War,
World Wars I and II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Persian
Gulf. |
